Hiya folks, Elling is on at the Duke of York next week at 2:15 and 6:45. The review from DoY is below. Hope to see you all there when we agree a time on Tuesday at Stanmer. Dave

A huge box office hit in its homeland and Academy Award nominee for best foreign film, Petter Naess’ comedy is a bizarre but beguiling proposition. Based on the best-selling Norwegian novel by Ingvar Ambjørnsen, it tells the story of shy, neurotic Elling and his oddball friendship with the loud, sex-obsessed Kjell Bjarne. Chucked out of a state home to fend for themselves, the pair are dropped off in an apartment in Oslo and told to learn how to behave like responsible citizens. Initially, the simple act of going around the corner for groceries is a challenge. But as their courage grows, the two find unusual ways to cope with society, striking up the most peculiar friendships in the most unlikely places. Slyly funny and emotionally affecting, ELLING is warm but without sentimentality: imagine THE ODD COUPLE, only with ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST’s McMurphy and The Chief in the Lemmon/Matthau roles.
